The holiday season is intuitively a season of giving – to family, friends, and even to complete strangers, giving to others and to people in need makes us feel good, and doing good to and for others is something we should strive to do year-round. From donating to a local food bank, helping someone with a heavy package or assisting someone with a load of groceries, these are little things you can do any or every day to be kind to other people. But how can we take it to the next level during the season of giving?

Below are a couple of ways that we can be more giving to others over this holiday season!

Give Your Time

Perhaps one of the best ways that you can be giving over the holiday season is to visit someone who may be lonely. This could include taking the time to visit a neighbor or family member who lives alone, or even visiting a local assisted living facility to chat with the elderly who may not have family who can come and visit often. You could even consider taking a small gift, like flowers or homemade sweets, to give them as a way to brighten the visit and make it extra special.

Give To Those In Need

Consider participating in a local Toys for Tots program. These bins can be found in nearly every store during the holiday season every year and can be filled with brand new toys, which will then be donated to local children in need. If you have young children you can use this as a learning experience and can encourage them to get involved by letting them know that they will be helping to make another child happy during the holidays.

Give From the Heart

Take the time to speak with those who are involved with a local church in order to determine which local families in your neighborhood are in need of help during the holiday season. Many leaders of these parishes know of families and individuals alike who could use the help, and going through a local church can be the best way to determine how you can best serve them.

Give To Your Soul

During the season of giving, it’s important to remember to give to yourself, and in this case, give to your soul. This is something that doesn’t require money, and could be along the lines of just doing something that fills you with joy, calm, or peace. The holiday season can be a busy time, and you could feel like you’re being pulled in many different directions. Take some time to give yourself the gift of feeding your soul. Journal, cook your favorite meal, curl up with a guilty pleasure movie or a nice long book. Do something that truly makes you happy, and try to work it into the new year, because feeding your soul shouldn’t be reserved just for the holiday season!
